The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has commenced with the contract to rebuild the MyCiTi stations in Dunoon; Joe Slovo and Phoenix.
The project entails the rebuilding of the three vandalised MyCiTi stations, namely the Dunoon, Usasaza and Freedom station, the latter previously named Phoenix.
At the Council sitting last week, 12 June 2024, the renaming of the Phoenix Station to Freedom Station was approved. This station is situated in Omurumba Road opposite the Joe Slovo suburb.
The City used this rebuild project as an opportunity to rename Phoenix to Freedom Station after hosting a public participation process last year to source comments from the community, which resulted in the majority of residents supporting it.
‘The contractor has established their site in the proximity of the station locations and plans to start with the construction soon. The anticipated completion date for these projects is November 2025, should all go according to plan. These stations need to be rebuilt so that the residents who depend on this reliable and safe public transport service can have easy access to the MyCiTi network again, from as close to home as possible,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Certain measures to mitigate the risk of these closed station buildings being damaged again, and to ensure continuity of operations, have been incorporated into these designs.
‘It was of utmost importance to us that we restore the MyCiTi services at the three destroyed stations, but with enhanced security and vandal resistant measures,’ said Councillor Quintas.
